Plovdiv, June 20, 2025 — On the occasion of World Refugee Day, which is observed every year on June 20, a festive event was held in Plovdiv, dedicated to promoting equality, tolerance, and mutual support among all residents of the city — regardless of their origin. The event was organized with the support of local authorities, non-governmental organizations, and civic activists working with forcibly displaced people.

With each passing year, the world is facing a rapidly increasing number of people forced to leave their homes due to armed conflicts, political persecution, or natural disasters. In 2024, according to UN data, the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide exceeded 122 million. In this context, it is essential not only to provide humanitarian aid but also to create an environment of acceptance, equality, and respect for the rights of every individual.

According to data from humanitarian organizations working on the ground, around 10,000 refugees live in Plovdiv and the surrounding region.

The event in Plovdiv clearly demonstrated how the city and its residents uphold the values of tolerance and solidarity. At the heart of the celebration were a variety of cultural activities: dances from different parts of the world, art workshops, tastings of traditional dishes, and games for children. All the activities aimed to break down cultural barriers and give both locals and refugees the opportunity to feel part of a shared community.

“Today we are not just celebrating cultural diversity, but emphasizing the importance of solidarity and mutual support,” said Nataliya Ellis, Director of the Ukraine Support and Renovation Foundation. “Refugees are becoming an integral part of life in Bulgaria, and it is our responsibility to create conditions in which they feel safe and have the opportunity for meaningful integration.”

Throughout the day, participants had the opportunity to meet with representatives of organizations working with refugees and to learn more about the integration process, as well as opportunities for education, employment, and social support.

World Refugee Day in Plovdiv is becoming a symbol of the city’s commitment to equality, inclusion, and humanity at a time when more and more people are seeking protection and a new beginning. The efforts to build an inclusive society continue, and such initiatives contribute to an even stronger and more united local community.

Once again, Plovdiv has demonstrated its commitment to values such as inclusion and support for those in need, turning our city into a stronger and more united community.
