Chess is a board game that has captivated a vast number of people from different countries. It originated in India in the 5th-6th centuries AD and quickly gained popularity. Today, chess is played by both professional players and amateur beginners. Scientists have proven the benefits of chess, as it enhances memory, intellect, logic, and aids in learning mathematics. Children who develop an early interest in chess show exceptional inventiveness and cleverness among their peers, leading to balanced, calm, and decisive personalities. This past weekend, the Third Children’s Amateur Chess Tournament “For a Unified Peaceful World!” took place in the city of Plovdiv. The honorary consul of Ukraine in Plovdiv, Eng. Dimitar Georgiev, inaugurated the tournament on November 4, 2023, making the first symbolic move on the chessboard. The sports hall of “Second Home” was buzzing with excitement before the games began. As the organizers signaled, the first match commenced, bringing about a focused silence, acknowledging the seriousness of the game. Over 70 participants from various cities in Bulgaria, including Ukrainians and Bulgarians, amateurs and experienced players, children, and high school students, took part in this chess tournament. Families came to support their children, and among them was a distinctive red, curly-haired supporter with long ears – a dog participating for the third time, just like its owner. The two days passed quickly and intensely, with each participant eager to showcase their skills and secure victory. On November 5, 2023, after the conclusion of the final match, points were tallied, and winners were announced in two age groups. In the first age group (up to 12 years old), among girls, Yana Mateeva secured the first place, followed by Maria Gancheva in second and Murad Sedef in third. Among boys, Alex Eneev claimed the first position, with Kasyan Mateev in second and Evgeny Ganchev in third. In the second age group (12 to 18 years old), among girls, Yulia Basova took the first place, followed by Polina Basova in second and Yana Bencheva in third. Among boys, Nikola Niklenov secured the first position, with Timofey Pomogaybo in second and Dmitry Tuchkov in third. All winners received valuable prizes such as headphones or speakers and cosmetic sets from the honorary consul of Ukraine in Plovdiv, Eng. Dimitar Georgiev. There were also two special prizes for children under 8 years old who accumulated the highest points – Lego sets awarded to Yoana Petrishka and Georgi Karadjov. All chess players received participation certificates and sweet gifts. A big thanks to UNICEF Bulgaria, the honorary consulate of Ukraine in Plovdiv, and our friends at the “ChessBomb” Chess Club in Plovdiv. Together, we achieve more!
