This year, we observe World Humanitarian Day as the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, which began spreading a few months ago.
One of the goals outlined in the UN Charter is “to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.” The United Nations first did this after World War II by helping to rebuild post-war Europe. Now, the international community relies on the organization to coordinate humanitarian operations in response to natural or man-made disasters in areas where the assistance required exceeds the capabilities of national authorities alone.
